Dive into the technical details of RAM frequencies, CL values, and DDR4/DDR5
What is RAM frequency?
RAM frequency (in MHz) represents how many data transfers the memory can perform per second. For example, DDR5-6000 has a transfer speed of 6000 MT/s (million transfers per second). The higher the frequency, the greater the data throughput (bandwidth) of the memory.
It should be noted that DDR (Double Data Rate) memory transmits data once on the rising edge and falling edge of each clock cycle, so the actual transmission speed is twice the frequency. But when calculating delay, the frequency can be directly substituted into the formula.
What is CL (CAS Latency)?
CAS Latency (Column Address Strobe Latency, CL for short) is the number of clock cycles required by the memory from receiving a read command to starting to transmit data. The smaller the CL number, the faster the memory responds.
However, CL cannot be used as a performance indicator alone - it must be viewed in conjunction with frequency. Although the CL value of a DDR5-6000 CL30 is higher than that of DDR4-3200 CL16, due to the significant increase in frequency, the actual latency is the same (both 10.0ns).
How is True Latency calculated?
Real latency (in nanoseconds ns) is the ultimate measure of how fast a memory actually responds and is calculated as:
延遲 (ns) = (CL × 2000) ÷ 頻率 (MHz)
For example: DDR5-6000 CL30 → (30 × 2000) ÷ 6000 = 10.0 ns
For example: DDR4-3200 CL16 → (16 × 2000) ÷ 3200 = 10.0 ns
It can be seen that although the CL and frequency of the two are very different, the real delay is exactly the same. This is why a latency calculator is necessary to objectively compare the performance of different memory specifications.
Differences between DDR4 and DDR5
DDR5 is a new generation memory standard. The main differences from DDR4 include:
- Significant increase in frequency: DDR4 mainstream 3200~3600 MHz, DDR5 starting at 4800 MHz, high-end up to 8000+ MHz
- CL value is higher: The CL of DDR5 is usually between 30~40, which is higher than the 14~18 of DDR4. However, due to the higher frequency, the actual delay can equal or even surpass DDR4
- Double the bandwidth: The data transmission bandwidth of DDR5 is 1.5~2 times that of DDR4, which has significant advantages for heavy loads such as video editing and AI computing.
- Single dual channel:DDR5 Each memory has a dual-channel architecture to further improve access efficiency.
Is high frequency necessarily faster?
Not necessarily. Memory performance needs to consider both frequency (MHz) and CL value. High frequency brings greater bandwidth, but if the CL value also increases, the actual delay may not decrease but increase.
For example: the real latency of DDR5-5600 CL36 is 12.86 ns, but better than DDR4-3200 CL16 10.0 ns About 29% slower. This shows that high frequency does not guarantee low latency, and actual calculations are still needed to make objective comparisons.
The best way is to use the "dual configuration comparison" function of this tool, fill in the two sets of specifications into A and B respectively, and let the data speak for itself.
How to choose the most suitable memory?
Depending on your usage scenario, the key points for selecting memory are different:
- 🎮 Gamer: Prioritize low-latency specifications. DDR5-6000 CL30 is currently recognized as the sweet spot for gaming, providing low latency and sufficient bandwidth.
- 🎬 Content Creator: Give priority to bandwidth. DDR5-6400 or above can effectively shorten rendering and conversion times. The CL value is relatively unimportant.
- 💼General documents: DDR4-3200 or DDR5-5600 are the basic models, and you won’t feel any significant difference.
- 🔬 Workstation/Server: Consider both latency and bandwidth and ensure sufficient capacity. ECC memory is also an important consideration.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions about Memory Selection and Latency
Is the memory of the 6000 CL30 good?
Very good. DDR5-6000 CL30 has a real latency of 10.0 ns, the same as DDR4-3200 CL16, but nearly twice the bandwidth. Currently considered the gaming sweet spot between Intel and AMD platforms, it is extremely cost-effective.
Which one is faster, 6400 CL32 or 6000 CL30?
After calculation, we get: 6400 CL32 delay = (32 × 2000) ÷ 6400 = 10.0 ns, 6000 CL30 delay = (30 × 2000) ÷ 6000 = 10.0 ns. The real latency of both is exactly the same! But the 6400 CL32 has higher bandwidth and will perform better under heavy load. This example perfectly illustrates that simply looking at CL or frequency is not accurate and must be calculated comprehensively.
Is DDR5 worth upgrading from DDR4?
If you build a new computer,Worth it. DDR5 provides higher bandwidth and has obvious advantages in heavy multitasking, content creation and AI computing. However, if you already have a DDR4 platform and the main use is for games, the game frame rate increase of upgrading to DDR5 is usually between 5~10%, and you need to evaluate the cost of replacing the motherboard and CPU. Using this tool's comparison feature, you can objectively evaluate the latency difference between the two.
Is lower CL better?
Not entirely correct. Low CL does mean fast response, but it must be considered in conjunction with frequency. A DDR5-8000 CL40 has the same latency (10.0 ns) as a DDR4-3200 CL16 (10.0 ns), but twice the bandwidth. Conversely, DDR5-5600 CL46 has a latency of up to 16.43 ns, which is slower than the excellent DDR4. The key is to calculate the true latency (ns) rather than just looking at the CL number.
Does memory latency have a big impact on gaming?
In CPU bottleneck scenarios (such as 1080p resolution, high-performance graphics cards), memory latency has a significant impact on game frame rates. Reducing latency can reduce the time the CPU waits for data and improve the stability of the 1% Low frame rate. But in GPU bottleneck scenarios (such as 4K resolution), the impact of memory latency will be diluted. Generally speaking, DDR5-6000 CL30 is currently the best balance between gaming performance and price.
What is XMP/EXPO? Need to turn it on?
XMP (Intel) and EXPO (AMD) are memory overclocking profile technologies. When shipped from the factory, memory usually operates at JEDEC standard speed (such as DDR5-4800), and XMP/EXPO can apply high-frequency settings (such as 6000 MHz) and corresponding CL values tested by the manufacturer with one click.Recommended to enable, otherwise the high-frequency memory you bought will only operate at the basic speed and will not be able to perform its functions. Once enabled, this tool can be used to calculate the actual latency performance achieved.
How to calculate memory bandwidth? What does it have to do with delay?
The calculation formula of memory bandwidth (GB/s) is:頻寬 = 頻率 × 64 ÷ 8 ÷ 1000(64 is the data bus width). For example, the bandwidth of DDR5-6000 is 6000 × 64 ÷ 8 ÷ 1000 = 48 GB/s。
Latency and bandwidth are two dimensions of memory performance: latency determines "how quickly the transmission starts", and bandwidth determines "how much can be transmitted per second." Games rely more on low latency, while large-scale data processing such as video editing and AI training require high bandwidth. The ideal memory should have both low latency and high bandwidth.
